1. Explain briefly the expression "islands of automation". Why are they considered to be suboptimal? How do they typically emerge? Which types of development activities might be considered to improve over this situation?

2. Explain briefly (2 - 3 sentences for each stage) the breakdown of a CIM study as described in the course material. Give examples of methods and/or tools which might be used in each stage.

3. a) Describe briefly the principle of KANBAN. (3 pts)

b) How should a KANBAN system be adjusted if the product consumption goes up? goes down? Why? (3 pts)

4. Describe the main types of data stored in the data bases of production planning and management systems. Discuss the integration issues to other component systems of a CIM environment arising from these data. (E.g., interface to product development, customer order entry, product configuration, etc.)

5. Write a short description (3-4 paragraphs) of the term "Flexible Manufacturing System" (FMS) such as might be included in an encyclopedia. Discuss the applicability of FMS's, i.e., when are they attractive? not attractive? Identify the prime issues of FMS's from CIM integration viewpoint.
