1. Write a short definition (3-4 paragraphs) of the expression "integrated enterprise" such as might be included in a encyclopedia.
2. Explain briefly the expression "islands of automation". Why are they considered to be suboptimal? How do they typically emerge? Which types of development activities might be considered to improve over this situation?
3. Describe briefly two "soft methods" for CIM. Compare and contrast the methods. In which problems are they attractive? Can you identify cases where they should not be used?
4. Define the term "CIM architecture". What is the role of the architecture in the realization of a CIM system? What constituent parts are involved in the architecture? What activities are required to realize a CIM architecture for a company?
5. Describe briefly the concept of "Concurrent Engineering". What is meant by "early sourcing"? "front loading"? Can you give examples of applying the concepts in other functions of a company beside product development?
